ZEEX Zimbabwe: New Capital Exchange for SMEs Launches

Finance Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube has launched the Zimbabwe Entrepreneurship Exchange (ZEEX) in Bulawayo, a new platform designed to help small and medium enterprises raise capital and access investment opportunities in a regulated market. It marks a notable shift in how Zimbabwe’s capital markets serve entrepreneurs who have historically struggled to access formal financing.

The stakes are significant. SMEs already generate more than 60% of Zimbabwe’s estimated US$56 billion GDP and employ over 70% of the national workforce. If ZEEX genuinely widens access to capital for that sector, it could become one of the more consequential fintech policy moves of the year. If it turns into another registration hurdle, it will join a long list of platforms that never reached the entrepreneurs they were built for.

What ZEEX Means for Zimbabwe’s SME Sector

ZEEX is positioned as a technology-driven bridge between small businesses and investment capital, operating within a regulated market environment rather than the informal financing many SMEs currently rely on. That regulation could bring credibility, but it also raises the question of whether first-time applicants, especially smaller and less established businesses, will find the process accessible.

Can ZEEX Reach Women, Youth, and Grassroots Entrepreneurs?

This is the central test for the platform. Capital access initiatives in Zimbabwe have often struggled to move beyond already established players. Daily Rush will be watching closely to see whether women-led, youth-led, and grassroots businesses are genuinely able to use ZEEX, or whether the benefits concentrate among larger, already well-connected firms.

Could ZEEX Unlock Diaspora Investment?

Prof Ncube has called on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange to market ZEEX directly to the diaspora, a signal that officials see remittance capital as an underused resource for domestic investment. Billions of dollars already flow into Zimbabwe through remittances each year. Whether ZEEX can convert even a portion of that into formal SME investment will be one of the platform’s biggest early tests.
